В Московском зоопарке прошел круглый стол «Вопросы адаптации манула»

Название EN:  The Moscow Zoo hosted a roundtable discussion entitled “Adaptation of Pallas’s Cats to Captive Environment”.
Описание EN:

On April 23, 2026, on the International Pallas’s Cat Day, a roundtable discussion dedicated to various
aspects of the adaptation of Pallas’s cats to captive environment was held at the Moscow Zoo. The event was organized on the initiative of Mikhail Morozov, lead zoologist of the Moscow Zoo and Coordinator of the EARAZA Program on the study, conservation and breeding of the Pallas’s cat. The meeting was attended by Moscow Zoo specialists and professionals from research and conservation organizations including the Federal Service for Supervision in the Use of Natural Resources (Rosprirodnadzor), A. N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg), Leningrad Zoo, Barnaul Zoo, Krasnoyarsk Park of Flora and Fauna “Roev Ruchei”, Interregional Association "Center for the Study and Conservation of the Snow Leopard "Irbis", Budgetary
Institution of the Republic of Buryatia "Natural Management and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Buryatia"; (BI Burpriroda), Saylyugemsky National Park (the Altai Republic), Tunkinsky National Park (the Republic of Buryatia), Ubsunur Hollow Biosphere Reserve (the Republic of Tyva), Land of the Leopard National Park (Primorsky Krai), as well as representatives of the Manul Working Group and Irbis Mongolia Center NGO (Mongolia).

At the opening of the meeting, Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo and EARAZA
President made a welcome address. “We carefully observe Pallas’s cats from a distance but don’t exactly know the needs of these animals when they get into a difficult situation. Cases of abandoned kittens being found in the steppe or adult cats in need of help are becoming more frequent, while the guidelines for the actions in such cases are still disparate. Our task is to gather all available information for developing a sound approach to address this problem,” said Svetlana Akulova.

The participants of the event presented reports on the assistance that can provided to Pallas’s cats in the wild, paperwork required for the removal of animals from the wild if necessary, and rehabilitation and preparation of Pallas’s cats for the release into the wild. Experts also spoke about plans to build a
rehabilitation center in the Daursky Nature Reserve and educational activity carried out in the Pallas’s cat habitats.

Президент ЕАРАЗА и СОЗАР Светлана Акулова приняла участие в ParkSeason Expo и III Всероссийской премии «Парки России»

Название EN:  EARAZA and UZAR President Svetlana Akulova Took Part in ParkSeason Expo and the III All-Russian “Parks of Russia” Award
Описание EN:

On 22 April 2026, the large-scale ParkSeason Expo forum took place in Moscow, bringing together professionals from the park and zoo sectors from regions of Russia, BRICS countries, and other nations around the world. One of the key participants of the event was Svetlana Akulova, President of the Euro-Asian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EARAZA) and the Union of Zoos and Aquariums of Russia (UZAR).

As part of the forum, Akulova visited the exhibition where EARAZA and UZAR presented their latest achievements and projects. She delivered a welcoming address to participants and subsequently, in her capacity as President of UZAR, moderated the thematic session “Zoos, Ornithological Parks and Mini-Farms”.

Together with Akulova, the session featured leading industry experts:

Bishop Ngobeni — President of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoos and representative of the African Parks Association. He shared experience in attracting visitors and discussed operational standards on the African continent.

Svetlana Sokolova — Director General of the Kaliningrad Zoo, who spoke about why the modern zoo has every right to exist and develop.

Asiya Gizzatullina — Director of the Kazan Zoobotanical Garden, who presented a new approach to operations based on science, education, reconstruction, and the role of the zoo as a public space.

Andrey Erkin — Director of the Central Park of Culture and Recreation of Volgograd and member of the Parks Subcommittee of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, who shared experience in effective zoning and creating year-round attractiveness for parks.

“A zoo is a museum of living nature, where the ‘exhibits’ breathe, run, fly, and require feeding. We combine three dimensions within our work: museum activities, park management, and nature conservation. It is precisely this balance — between visitor comfort, preservation of the ‘exhibits’, and animal welfare — that makes us unique,” Akulova emphasized.

She cited impressive figures: among UZAR members alone, total annual attendance amounted to approximately 20 million visitors. At the same time, in smaller cities, zoos receive between three and thirty times more visitors than the number of residents living there. This confirms that zoos and aquariums today are true drivers of tourism and a source of pride for their regions.

The culmination of the forum was the awards ceremony for the laureates and winners of the Third All-Russian “Parks of Russia” Award — the country’s main park industry event of the year, bringing together professionals who make parks and zoos better, more comfortable, and more engaging for people every day.

Akulova served on the Award’s Expert Council and, together with her colleagues, selected the country’s best zoos in the special “Zoo” nomination.

The Kaliningrad Zoo was named the winner of the nomination.

“This is especially gratifying for me: I know the zoo’s team well, and I know how much heart, effort, and love they put into their work. The Kaliningrad Zoo is not simply a place where animals live; it is a truly modern scientific and educational centre of which the entire country can be proud. Congratulations, friends! This victory is well deserved!” Akulova commented on her colleagues’ achievement.

She also congratulated all laureates and winners in the other award categories — from “Children’s Park” to “Person of the Year” — and thanked them for their work, which makes cities vibrant, green, and welcoming.

К 95-летию со дня рождения Станислава Михайловича Кудрявцева (1930-1996)

Название EN:  On the 95th anniversary of Stanislav Mikhailovich Kudryavtsev (1930-1996)
Описание EN:

Stanislav Mikhailovich Kudryavtsev was born on November 24, 1930, in Moscow. He lived not far from the Moscow Zoo and since his childhood, spent every day there, from morning till evening. Observing the life of animals, he remembered their appearance, behaviors, and voices and could distinguish animals by sight, noting individual features of each of them. His memory was like that of the computer where information about all species of animals kept at the zoos of the world was stored. He could determine the sex of any bird when no apparent features of sexual dimorphism were seen and served as a consultant for the Zoocentre of the Main Directorate of Hunting and Nature Reserves of the Russian Federation. Stanislav treated all living creatures with reverence and kept fishes, birds, amphibians and other animals both at home and in his office. Willows grown from the stem cuttings that he brought back from his trips still grow around the ponds of the Zoo. Nobody called him by his full name; he was Stas or Stasik for everyone who was lucky to know him well. Not having advanced knowledge of any foreign language, he communicated freely with any foreigners when it came to animals. Like no one else, he could raise abandoned chicks taking them out from under his jacket when it was time to feed them. As Stas walked through the zoo, the animals recognized him and strived to attract his attention with their poses, behavior, and vocalizations.

During his trip to England where he went for accompanying a giant panda, Stas captivated the staff of the London Zoo with his knowledge. He became a member of the London Zoological Society and was appointed to the editorial board of the International Zoo Yearbook as a representative of the Soviet Union. He was also an active member of the EEP Species Committee for the Amur tiger.

Stas was involved in the preparation of the Czech Encyclopedic Atlas of Animals, as well as of the book Systematic of Birds by N. N. Kartashov, and many other publications.

Over two hundred people gathered at the memorial service at the Zoo to honor Stanislav Kudryavtsev in his final journey. For almost two years, condolences have been coming to the Moscow Zoo from abroad where people expressed their deep respect to Stas’s memory. Ray Pawley from Brookfield Zoo in the USA noted Stanislav’s “rare talent, essentially close to the talent of a composer”.

In 1997, EARAZA Annual Conference made a decision to name the EARAZA top award after Stanislav Kudryavtsev.

В Астане прошла вторая научно-практическая конференция «Опыт и перспективы развития декоративной и товарной аквакультуры»

Название EN:  The second scientific and practical conference «Experience and prospects for the development of ornamental and commercial aquaculture» was held in Astana
Описание EN:

On April 17-18, 2025, the second scientific and practical conference "Experience and Prospects for the Development of Ornamental and Commercial Aquaculture" was held in Astana, organized by the Ailand Astana Oceanarium (formerly "Duman"). The event brought together experts from Russia, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and other countries.

In addition to the hosts of the event, the Kazakh delegation was represented by employees of the Almaty Zoo and aquaculture professionals. The participants from Russia included specialists from the Moskvarium, the oceanariums of Voronezh, St. Petersburg, the Primorsky Oceanarium on Russky Island, as well as employees of the Kaliningrad Museum of the World Ocean. The conference was attended by the director of the Aquarium Complex Aqua Logo Petr Bakuta and representatives of other suppliers of aquarium fish.

The central figure of the event was Oleg Nikolaevich Yunchis, a leading ichthyopathologist and specialist at the St. Petersburg Oceanarium. He is known for his developments in the field of diagnostics and treatment of fish, including difficult-to-keep shark species. According to the expert, the inhabitants of marine aquariums in closed artificial systems are most vulnerable to various diseases.

The conference participants were greatly impressed by Tatyana Aksyonkina's report on the construction of a new building of the Kaliningrad Museum of the World Ocean, in which Aqua Logo is actively involved. Tatyana presented a film about the current exhibitions of the museum and the new one, which is being prepared for opening, accompanying it with a live commentary, it turned out to be very exciting.

Our report "Kamchatka crab. From fishing to breeding" aroused increased interest among the conference audience. As part of the construction of the scientific and educational center of FEFU on Russky Island, we are planning to create a laboratory for the artificial reproduction of crustaceans. The general designer of the Center approached us and asked to develop a technology for artificial reproduction for its further protection. Currently, the finished design documentation is undergoing an examination.

A notable event was the speech of Natalia Gireva, chief specialist of the department of maintenance of hydrobionts of tropical seas of the Primorsky Oceanarium, who spoke about the breeding of marine organisms.

The organizational aspects of the conference deserve the highest praise: clear transfer, attentive attitude to participants, high-quality organization of coffee breaks and lunches.

Конференция «Вселенная белого медведя: эффективное сотрудничество в Арктике»

Название EN:  Conference «Polar Bear Universe: Effective Cooperation in the Arctic»
Описание EN:

The conference "Universe of the Polar Bear: Effective Cooperation in the Arctic" brought together about 850 participants.

On March 21, the VIII International Scientific and Practical Conference "Universe of the Polar Bear: Effective Cooperation in the Arctic" concluded. The event was held in three cities - Moscow, St. Petersburg and Anadyr - and gathered about 850 participants from 12 countries: Russia, Belarus, Brazil, Egypt, Italy, Kazakhstan, China, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore, the Czech Republic and Uzbekistan.

During the four-day business program, more than 200 reports were presented on a wide range of topics related to the study, conservation and sustainable development of the Arctic.

"The Arctic is a strategically important region for the whole world. Climate change, melting ice, biodiversity conservation - all these and many other issues are important for the future of humanity," said Yury Trutnev, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.

"The increased interest in the Arctic is associated with the active development of this strategically important region for our country, the development of the Northern Sea Route, and global climate change. The polar bear is at the center of discussions. Being the largest land predator on the planet, it is also one of the most vulnerable," emphasized Alexander Kozlov, Minister of Natural Resources of Russia, in his welcoming speech to the conference participants.

"It is necessary to preserve the Arctic as a territory of peace, stability and mutually beneficial cooperation. The most important priority remains ensuring a balance between human economic activity and environmental conservation," stressed Svetlana Rodionova, Head of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Usage, in her welcoming speech delivered by Amirhan Amirkhanov, Advisor to the Head of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Usage.

According to Svetlana Akulova, Director General of the Moscow Zoo, since 2018, a human-polar bear conflict prevention group has been operating in the Arctic, which has proven its effectiveness. All conflict animals are successfully returned to their natural habitat without harm to people.

Several sessions at the conference were dedicated to the polar bear: "Polar Bear and Marine Mammals", "Activities of Arctic Protected Areas", "Biodiversity Monitoring", "Bear Patrol" and others. During the discussions, experts shared the most relevant research results on the predator. For example, as part of the study of the Kara subpopulation of polar bears, satellite tagging of 7 polar bears was performed in the summer of 2024, with two males being tagged with ear tags instead of collars for the first time in Russia. Data from these devices are important for assessing the status of the Kara subpopulation of polar bears, which is currently the least studied in the Russian Federation.

On the final day, a session "Zoos, Aquariums and Oceanariums: Role and Participation in Arctic Ecosystem Research" was held, discussing the participation of these institutions in polar bear conservation.

Научная конференция «Океан в городе 2025» в Москвариуме

Название EN:  Scientific conference «Ocean in the city 2025» in Moskvarium
Описание EN:

The Moskvarium Center for Oceanography and Marine Biology hosted the international scientific-practical conference "Ocean in the City" for the fifth time, with participation of more than 200 specialists from Russia and other countries.

From February 7 to 9, 2025, Moskvarium held its annual event for professionals in marine biology, terrarium keeping, aquarium keeping and water treatment, which facilitates cooperation between scientists and practitioners, as well as advances science and improves animal care standards.

"The first 'Ocean in the City' was held in 2019 as a small open seminar attended by only 17 people. Today, thanks to active scientific work and cooperation with international organizations, we are already holding the fifth anniversary scientific conference, which featured more than 50 speakers and gathered about 200 guests from Russia, CIS countries and Southeast Asia," said Irina Meintser, Deputy General Director of Moskvarium.

During the three days of the conference, participants discussed the organization of work in oceanariums, zoos and dolphinariums, rehabilitation and veterinary medicine of aquatic animals, as well as educational activities in aquariums.

"This event is particularly significant as we have been conducting joint scientific work with Moskvarium for a long time, and the Center's staff are members of our associations. Thanks to this event, we are able to continuously improve standards and conditions for keeping animals in artificial environments, as well as apply the accumulated experience to the rehabilitation of wildlife," said Tatiana Vershinina, Executive Director of SOZAR and Executive Secretary of EARAZA.

The conference format differed from traditional events - in addition to the lecture part, much attention was paid to practical aspects. Participants were able to attend open training sessions with dolphins and Baikal seals, which allowed them to get a closer look at the training process and interaction with the oceanarium inhabitants.

Moskvarium staff conducted detailed guided tours of the oceanarium and life support systems, allowing participants to get a closer look at how the Center operates from the inside. In addition, discussion clubs and round tables were organized at the venue.

This year, the Moskvarium Center for Oceanography and Marine Biology plans to develop educational activities for younger generations. In April 2025, the event "Ocean in the City. Children" will be held here.
