Birds: Husbandry, Breeding, Veterinary Medicine (in Russian)
We are pleased to present the conference proceedings compiled from materials of the
International scientific and practical conferences held at the Vorobyi Birds Park (Kaluzhskaya
Oblast) over various years. It is not a coincidence that these conferences have become a
biennial tradition at the Birds Park. Despite its relatively young age, the Park has established an
extensive collection of exotic and Palearctic birds, along with numerous other species
(mammals, reptiles, fish, and invertebrates). Unlike most zoos, the Birds Park dedicates
significant space in its collection to domesticated birds (pigeons, chickens, guinea fowl, ducks,
geese, ostriches, etc.). The proceedings include contributions from both the Birds Park staff and
professionals from other Russian and international zoos. The publications are intended for
specialists of the zoos, breeding centers and bird farms, as well as for zoologists, lecturers, and
students of universities and colleges.
Scientific Research in Zoological Parks (in Russian)
Modern zoos perform many important functions, with scientific research being one of their
priorities. The conservation role of zoos has long been recognized, encompassing the
conservation of endangered species through captive breeding (ex-situ breeding programs), as
well as studies on animal husbandry, nutrition, behavior in artificial environment, veterinary
care, disease prevention, and numerous related aspects of zoo science. Scientific work in zoos is
multifaceted, as evidenced by many publications including this collection of papers based on
materials from the EARAZA workshop held on November 23-25, 2010, in Moscow. This
publication is intended for zoo professionals and staff of related institutions maintaining animal
collections.

designed to promote the development of zoo science. This annual publication is intended for
zoologists, ecologists, animal scientists, other zoo specialists, university and non-university
educators, and biology students.
Current Veterinary Issues in Zoos (in Russian, with brief summaries in English)
Veterinary science is currently rapidly advancing. However, traditionally, its main subjects of
research have been farm and domestic animals, and more recently, small laboratory and exotic
pets bought from pet markets. At the same time, veterinarians in zoos and other institutions
maintaining collections of wild animals from diverse taxa feel the need for the information
about results of specialized research aimed at the animal treatment, disease prevention, and
methods of animal immobilization and anesthesia. The enormous diversity of species in zoo
culture necessitates intensification of veterinary research in this area. Both targeted studies
and analysis of veterinary practitioners experience are important here. The collections of
scientific and methodological papers presented in these publications are based on the
outcomes of the EARAZA International Workshops Current Veterinary Issues in Zoos, held at
the Scientific and Methodological Department of the Moscow Zoo and EARAZA Information
Center. In compiling these publications, the editorial board sought to demonstrate potential
research directions for veterinary departments of zoos and related institutions. We are grateful
to all authors who submitted their manuscripts to the editorial board and shared their
experience in the field of veterinary medicine. These publications are intended for
veterinarians, employees of zoos, breeding centers, biological research and educational
institutions, and veterinary students.
Bustards of the Palearctic: Breeding and Conservation (in Russian, with brief summaries in English)
Due to increasing anthropogenic pressure, the populations of bustard birds (the Great Bustard,
the Houbara Bustard, and the Little Bustard) have sharply declined in the recent decades. For
example, in Germany, their numbers have dramatically decreased. The ranges of these species
have also decreased significantly. Thus, in the southern parts of Russia, the nesting population
of the Great Bustard has disappeared, while in British Isles bustards went completely extinct
almost 200 years ago. This raises the urgent task of the conservation of bustards, along with
other bird species of open landscapes facing intensive agricultural development. One effective
conservation approach has been the establishment of captive breeding groups in aviary
complexes, which allows creating a genetic bank to support wild populations of bustards.
Unfortunately, natural breeding of bustard species remains problematic. Good results in the
breeding of the great bustard have been achieved by the zoos of Moscow and Novosibirsk. At
the same time, methods of artificial insemination for the Houbara Bustard have been
successfully developed and widely implemented in Arab states, with initial progress being made
for other species of Palearctic bustards. The presented publications contain a large
bibliographic section, as well as valuable recommendations on breeding methods and
conservation of the local populations of bustards. These publications are intended for the staff
of zoos and breeding centers, as well as for the specialists of wildlife protection bodies.
Zoo Education (in Russian)
The two publications contain information on educational activities in EARAZA zoos, including
the proceedings of EARAZA conferences in St. Petersburg (2006 and 2011) and international
educational conferences, as well as materials and methodological guidelines for conducting
international conservation campaigns of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Original scripts for holiday and public events are also included. The publications contain
summaries of selected chapters of the World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Strategy (WAZA),
focusing on the zoos’ educational and conservation activities. These publications are intended
for professionals: educators and organizers of zoo public events and campaigns.

Problems of Aquaculture (in Russian, with summaries in English)
Over the recent years, aquariumistics has undergone a true scientific and technological
revolution. Alongside the traditional freshwater systems, marine aquariums are being
improved, with their equipment becoming more sophisticated and optimized. Feeding methods
for aquatic animals have reached a new level. Practices of disease prevention and treatment of
aquarium animals are being optimized. Breeding techniques are being developed, which is now
particularly relevant for marine fish and invertebrate species. Mariculture (marine aquaculture)
is progressing at a good pace. The experience accumulated by various institutions and hobbyists
needs to be systematized and made accessible to professionals working with aquaculture, as
well as to dedicated hobbyists. To this end, the Aqua Logo Engineering Company, in
collaboration with EARAZA and RUZA, annually holds scientific and practical conferences
dedicated to various aspects of aquaculture issues. Information presented by the specialists at
the related conferences is included in these publications that are intended for employees of
oceanariums, aquariums, dolphinariums, and zoos, as well as professional fish farmers and
amateur aquariumsts.
